The Sugar Land Police Department has many opportunities for employment. All Police recruitment is handled by the City of Sugar Land Human Resources Department.

Police Recruits
Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an institution / program accredited by the American Council on Education with a GPA of 2.0 or higher, or
  • Two years military service with an honorable discharge
The salary for noncertified recruits starts at the Police Recruit level. Upon graduation of the Police Academy and successful completion of the TCOLE exam, salary will advance to the Police Officer starting salary. See the recruitment page for more information.

Certified Peace Officers
Candidates must be TCOLE certified and meet one or more of the following criteria:
  • At least 2 years of service as a sworn peace officer OR
  • At least 30 hours of college credit from an accredited university with a cumulative 2.0 grade-point average or higher (The institution/program must be recognized as accredited through the U.S. Department of Education- Office of Postsecondary Education.) OR
  • At least 24 months of active duty military service with an honorable discharge.

All Candidates for Police Officer must pass each step of the selection process, including:

  1. A thorough Background Investigation
  2. A Written Examination
  3. Physical Fitness Testing
  4. Oral Review Board
  5. Polygraph Examination
  6. Interview with Chief of Police
  7. Medical and Psychological Testing
  8. Have eyesight which is correctable to 20/20 (both eyes)
  9. Possess a valid driver’s license not in jeopardy of suspension or revocation
Non-tobacco users are preferred.

Entry Level Salary

These salary ranges are effective from October 1, 2016 to September 30, 2017.
Hourly Annual Police Recruit $21.83 $45,406 Police Officer $25.41 $52,853

Incentive Pay

Educational Degrees

  • Associate’s: $50 / month
  • Bachelor’s: $100 / month
  • Master’s: $150 / month

Certification Levels

  • Intermediate: $50 / month
  • Advanced: $100 / month
  • Master’s: $150 / month

Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS)

  • Employee contribution: 7%
  • City matches 2:1 with 5 years vesting

Retirement Eligibility

  • Age 60 and over vested, or
  • 20 years of service, any age

Longevity Pay

After one year of employment, employees will receive an annual payment of $4 per month of employment for the first 25 years of continuous employment, maximum of $1,200 annually. Qualified employees receive longevity payments each December.

Education Reimbursement
