Record Amount of Material Diverted from Landfills

Sugar Land, TX – More than 48 percent of residential materials were diverted from area landfills in March according to the city’s solid waste and recycling provider.

During an average month, Sugar Land residents recycle about 38 percent. The March increase was largely due to a record amount of green waste recycling.

Sugar Land residents recycled more than 1,980 tons of green waste in March compared to the average of 840 tons a month. The increased volume is more than double the typical month.  In addition, 650 tons of recyclables were diverted from the landfill.

Green waste service is provided once a week and is recycled into mulch or compost at a composting facility.  Green waste includes grass clippings, leaves, brush, tree limb, etc.
