Kempner Street Construction, Wood Street Closure Expected Soon

Sugar Land, Texas - A construction project to realign Kempner Street between Main Street and Wood Street is expected to begin the week of Jan. 30.

The realignment is necessary to accommodate the closure of the Wood Street railroad crossing, which was required by Union Pacific Railroad (UPR) to accommodate a new crossing at University Boulevard.

The extension of University Boulevard across U.S. 90A and the railroad tracks will accomplish the long-planned “Burney Road Bypass” project, an important north-south corridor that provides for the mobility of residents north of U.S. 90A while alleviating traffic in residential areas along Main Street and Burney Road.

When complete, Kempner Street’s connection to Main Street will be located north of the current intersection. Kempner will be temporarily closed during construction, and motorists will be diverted north on Main Street.

The project will also include modifications to the intersection at U.S. Highway 90A and Savoy.

Motorists should obey all traffic signs, stay alert and expect delays during the construction. Construction updates will be posted at www.sugarlandtx.gov/construction. For questions about train horns and crossing arms, call the UPR Response Management Communication Center at (888) 877-7267.
