Flood Map Modernization Program

Flood MapThe Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) started a nationwide Flood Map Modernization Program in 2004. The main objective of this program was to provide better quality and updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) that would identify the flooding risks within a community. This map enables insurance agents to issue accurate flood insurance policies to homeowners in communities participating in the National Flood Insurance Program.

The current FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps in Fort Bend County were last updated in 1997 and the data used in making these maps was approximately 30 years old.  The Fort Bend County map update initiative began in 2005.  Both Fort Bend County and the City of Sugar Land under an agreement with FEMA contributed local government share of funding to facilitate this program in Fort Bend County.

FEMA released the updated maps to Sugar Land in preliminary format on October 30, 2009.  The updated Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRM) along with the process leading to the adoption of these new maps can be obtained from the link noted below on the Fort Bend County web Site.  For additional details and questions pertaining to this map update, and for addresses located within the corporate limits of City of Sugar Land, please contact the City’s Engineering Department at (281) 275-2780.
