Partnering for Progress
The three highways that serve Sugar Land—U.S. 59, U.S. 90A and State Highway 6—have been under reconstruction for four years. The projects are completed or in the final stages. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the City of Sugar Land have endeavored to minimize congestion during the construction.
The combined expansion and renovation projects amounted to $500 million--and nearly 100 new lane miles of highway and frontage roads.
- U.S. Highway 59: widened from four lanes to eight lanes, and bridging Sweetwater Blvd., University Blvd. and State Highway 99 (Grand Parkway);
- U.S. 90A: widened from four lanes to eight lanes between U.S. 59 and State Highway 6;
- S.H. 6: widened from four lanes to six lanes between First Colony Blvd. and Sugar Land Regional Airport, and bridging University Blvd. and U.S. 90A and the Union Pacific railroad.
As of February 2008, here is what is left to be completed:
The S.H. 6 main lane and bridge construction project is complete. Landscaping in the area of the S.H. 6 and U.S. 90A intersection is tentatively scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
The eight lanes of U.S. 90A are completed. The 30-foot wide median is in the final stages of completion. The permanent traffic signal will be installed by summer 2008. New wayside horns at Union Pacific railroad intersection crossings are installed and will be operational in February 2008; these horns will greatly reduce noise levels in the adjacent neighborhoods. The City of Sugar Land has also completed the several utility interconnect projects at various intersections along the U.S. 90A corridor.
Heavy rains and a high Brazos River level during autumn and winter 2007 delayed the U.S. 59 bridging of the Brazos River. By May 2008, there will be two additional main lanes in each direction, providing motorists with a total of four lanes in the southbound direction and five lanes in the northbound direction crossing the river. A new permanent northbound entrance ramp to U.S. 59 just south of the Brazos River is also under construction. Also, a new entrance ramp to U.S. 59 northbound south of S.H. 99 (Grand Parkway) is scheduled to open in May 2008, benefiting motorists from Williams Way, Greatwood and S.H. 99. The intersection of S.H. 99 and U.S. 59 should be completed by August 2008.
