1.
A petition to prohibit red light cameras was recently submitted to the City. Why wasn’t an election called?
The petition included the required number of signatures; however, the signatures were not collected in the manner specified by the City Charter, a document that was reviewed and updated by Sugar Land voters in 2011.
2.
How will Sugar Land respond to the concerns of citizens who signed the petition?
The receipt of the petition represents a significant concern of Sugar Land residents, so City Council created an independent citizen task force to study the effectiveness of red light cameras.
3.
How will their review be independent?
The mayor will select a chairperson who will lead the efforts of the citizen group. A staff member without any involvement in the red light camera program will provide all necessary resources to the task force to accomplish this important work.
4.
How can I provide my input to the task force?
The task force will begin work in early August, and all meetings will be open to the public and posted on the City website.
