They are on the front lines of public safety, preventing and investigating crime, protecting and aiding citizens, and ready to put their lives at risk for people they’ve never met.
They are the Sugar Land Police Department. And now you have the opportunity to "take an inside look" at the department, a remarkable organization of people and technology. The Citizens' Police Academy has a limited enrollment, and participants receive "hands on" instruction in crime scene investigation, patrol procedures, firearms training and much more.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a Sugar Land Police Officer? Please join us for our 44th session of our Sugar Land Citizens' Police Academy. The class meets every Thursday for 10 weeks beginning Sept. 10, from 7-10 p.m., at the Sugar Land Police Department.
Students are introduced to all aspects of law enforcement, including:
- Police Department Structure
- Criminal Scene Investigations (CSI: Sugar Land)
- Patrol Procedures
- Traffic Laws and Traffic Stops
- Firearms Training
(Note: This does not meet requirements for a DPS Concealed Carry License) - Self-Defense Training

The class is offered free of charge to Sugar Land residents and individuals that work in Sugar Land.
Rejection Criteria
The following criteria will be used when reviewing applications for admission to the Sugar Land Police Department Citizens’ Police Academy. An applicant will be rejected from attending the academy if any of the following statements apply.
- Applicant does not reside within the incorporated city limits of Sugar Land or applicant does not have an employment address within the incorporated city limits of Sugar Land
- Applicant has not provided a fully completed application
- Applicant does not provide a copy of their drivers license
- Applicant does not provide a copy of valid automobile liability insurance
- Applicant has a criminal history containing a Class “B” misdemeanor or above in the previous 5 years from the date of application
- Prior felony convictions regardless of time period.
