Background

On April 20, 2015, the City of Sugar Land was notified by the news media that a small amount of radioactive material was accidentally released inside Thermo Fisher’s facility, 1410 Gillingham Lane, on April 14, 2015. Because the state is not currently required to notify the City of such material releases, the City of Sugar Land took proactive, deliberate measures to obtain answers from Thermo Fisher and the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), the environmental regulatory agency responsible for monitoring radioactive materials and remediation.

On March 10, 2016, DSHS notified the City of contamination in the City’s drainage ditch near the Thermo Fisher Scientific facility. The contamination was discovered during required testing for the facility’s decommissioning process.

On October 18, 2016, the City Council approved an agreement with Thermo Fisher Scientific that ensures the remediation of the drainage ditch and other contaminated property.  The agreement also requires the surveying and remediation of surrounding properties.
