Citizen-Approved Drainage Project to Begin in Telfair

Sugar Land, TX – Sugar Land City Council recently approved a $2.2 million contract for drainage improvements in Telfair.

The project was part of four general obligation bond propositions totaling $90.76 million decisively approved by Sugar Land voters on Nov. 5, 2019.  The projects included in the propositions were selected based on extensive planning through various master plans, City Council input and the results of citizen satisfaction surveys that indicated drainage, public safety and traffic/mobility are the top three priorities for residents.

More than $47 million was approved for drainage improvements, including the Telfair project at New Territory Boulevard and Chatham Avenue that is expected to begin in December and should be finished by May 2022.

“This project addresses a need identified by our residents and demonstrates our commitment to deliver projects approved by voters in the 2019 bond election,” said City Engineer Jessie Li. “This intersection regularly experiences excessive street ponding during major storm events. A drainage study was completed in 2018 for this intersection, and the study identified the area exceeded the city's performance criteria as identified in our Master Drainage Plan.”

The drainage project will include the installation of a new storm sewer line parallel to the existing line and enlargement of inlets. The new line will start at the intersection of New Territory Boulevard, extend south down Chatham Avenue for 2,000 feet and discharge into Fort Bend County Levee Improvement District 17’s drainage facility.

City staff held a public meeting with residents on Aug. 25 to explain the project. The project is not expected to result in service interruptions such as water service, power outages, solid waste or mail delivery. Temporary lane closures and detours will be communicated on the city's website, through HOA notifications, with social media postings and electronic messages boards placed on site.
