Crisis Intervention Team
The City of Sugar Land is a rapidly growing city filled with diverse communities. Inside of the Sugar Land Police Department exists a dedicated group of individuals known as the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). Their purpose is not only to enforce the law but also to provide compassionate assistance and support during times of a mental health crisis.
The CIT is an innovative approach to policing that recognizes the complex and sensitive nature of mental health crises. Its primary goal is to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community, ensuring that individuals experiencing a mental health crisis receive the help they need while maintaining public safety.
When a person calls 911 in Sugar Land a telecommunication operator or dispatcher will answer and say, “Sugar Land 911, what is the address of your emergency?” Once that is answered, the dispatcher will ask questions about the reason you called. Depending on the answers they will dispatch a CIT police officer and or fire/EMS to your location. Trained officers, equipped with specialized knowledge in crisis intervention techniques, will respond to the call. Their primary objective is not to arrest or punish, but to de-escalate the situation and provide immediate assistance. They recognize that a mental health crisis demands empathy, understanding, and a different approach from traditional law enforcement. We have a team of 8 CIT, mental health officer certified, police officers spread across days, evening and nightshifts. We are working to create a standalone team with 24- hour coverage, until then, these officers will respond when available. Rest assured, that even if these CIT officers are not able to respond to a mental health call, all of the officers at the Sugar Land Police Department have Crisis Intervention Training and get yearly update refresher CIT training.
The CIT officers are not just police officers; they are compassionate listeners, skilled negotiators, and advocates for mental health. They possess the ability to recognize the signs of a mental health crisis and employ de-escalation strategies to diffuse potentially volatile situations. By employing active listening, empathy, and non-confrontational communication, they create an environment of trust and understanding.
The purpose of the Sugar Land Crisis Intervention Team goes beyond crisis resolution. They work passionately to establish strong relationships with mental health professionals, community organizations, and support networks. This collaboration ensures that individuals in a mental health crisis receive the appropriate care and resources necessary for their recovery. Sugar Land CIT officers strive to break the cycle of crisis by connecting individuals with long-term support services, such as counseling, therapy, and substance abuse programs.
Moreover, the Sugar Land CIT plays a vital role in educating law enforcement officers about mental health issues. They conduct training programs, workshops, and seminars to equip officers with the necessary knowledge and skills to handle crisis situations effectively. By promoting understanding and empathy within law enforcement agencies, the CIT fosters a culture of compassion and supports the overall well-being of both officers and the community.
The impact of the Sugar Land Crisis Intervention Team cannot be overstated. By providing immediate support, connecting individuals with appropriate resources, and promoting mental health awareness, they contribute to a safer and more compassionate community oriented law enforcement response. They are the embodiment of a progressive and inclusive approach to law enforcement that prioritizes the well-being of all individuals involved in a mental health crisis.
The mission of the Sugar Land CIT is to ensure that no one facing a mental health crisis is left behind or treated as a criminal. Through their unwavering dedication and compassionate approach, they strive to build a community where mental health is valued, and everyone receives the care, safety and support they deserve.
