Discounted Rain Barrel Program Yields Water Savings

2024 City News Releases Posted on February 26, 2024

Sugar Land, TX – The city of Sugar Land has renewed its partnership to offer discounted rain barrels – a key initiative intended to reduce cost and demand  through water conservation.

The program is now in its third year and has already resulted in a water savings to the city of approximately 950,000 gallons per year.

The rain barrel program was identified in the citizen-led Integrated Water Resource Plan approved by City Council. The plan promotes conservation strategies intended to secure a safe, reliable source of water in Sugar Land for future generations.

“This program is an excellent way for residents to reduce water demand through rainwater capture, save money and contribute to environmental sustainability that benefits our entire community,” said Deputy Director of Public Works Katie Clayton, P.E. “We’re excited to again partner with Rainwater Solutions. This is one part of a comprehensive effort to ensure a reliable water supply for our city that keeps our community safe.”

The $77 rain barrels will be available to Sugar Land residents for $45 at www.rainbarrelprogram.org/sugarlandtx from Feb. 9 through March 13 while supplies last.

The barrels will be delivered to Sugar Land Public Works, 111 Gillingham Lane. A drive-through pick-up event is scheduled for March 23 in the Public Works parking lot.
