Adoption Information
Thank you for your interest in the Sugar Land Animal Shelter. Whether you already have a specific pet in mind or are looking to find a match, we are here to help you every step of the way.
Sugar Land Animal Shelter is one of the few shelters that treats heartworm positive dogs during their time at the shelter and after adoption to ensure high quality of life and adoptability. Monthly heartworm prevention is critical to avoid this common but preventable condition that is transmitted by mosquitoes.
Step 1: Meet our Adoptable Pets!
You can see adoptable pets by visiting the shelter during normal business hours or see them online. Kittens and puppies (under 6 months) are first come, first served - no holds are allowed.
- Sugar Land Animal Shelter
- Located at 101B Gillingham, Sugar Land, TX 77478
- Hours (Mon, Tues, Thurs & Fri 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sat 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Closed Sunday and Wednesday.)

Need help or not sure who might be a good fit? If you know what type of personality or pet would best fit your lifestyle, we would love to help you find a match! Our trained staff will talk with you about your household makeup, lifestyle and other factors and recommend a pet that might fit well in your home.
We highly recommend visiting the shelter in person. Please contact us at 281-275-ADOG (2364) if you would like to coordinate a meet and greet or visit the shelter during normal hours.
Step 2: Sleepover or Straight Adoption?
Once you have selected a pet, you have the option of a sleepover or straight adoption.
Sleepover Option
The shelter provides a sleepover period of 7 days before the adoption is finalized to see how a selected pet fits into your lifestyle outside the shelter. It's a great opportunity to explore the pet's personality in a stress-free environment, whether you have other animals, children, or are unsure if you are ready to fully commit. After the sleepover period, you can schedule an appointment to complete the adoption paperwork in person or by email, or you can return the pet to the shelter if it is not a good fit for your family. (You can return the animal sooner than 7 days if you determine that it is not a good fit during the sleepover period.)
Straight Adoption
If you feel a strong connection or experience love at first sight with a pet, you do have the option to adopt them right away. Straight adoption is convenient for many families, but sleepovers are encouraged, as all adoptions are final and returns are not accepted once adoption papers are signed.
Step 3: Adoption Appointment
If you have found your new forever friend, great! We kindly request that you schedule an appointment to finalize the adoption so that we can have all the paperwork ready for you. Appointments take approximately 30 minutes and cover information such as:
- Review of microchipping information
- Discussion of the pet's medical history and any upcoming medical treatments
- Signing of an adoption contract
- Payment of adoption fees
- Optional donations for shelter enrichment
Adoption Fees
Adoptions include an initial medical exam, microchip, spay/neuter procedure (if not already complete), rabies vaccine, age-appropriate core vaccines, heartworm testing for dogs, fecal testing, deworming, as well as heartworm and flea prevention. If your animal is less than 12 weeks of age we will schedule a time for you to return for the state required rabies vaccine from our vet (due between 12 & 16 weeks of age and annually thereafter).
