Open Data Portal

Sugar Land Insights is the City's first open data portal. City Council approved the creation of the portal as a method to drive the City's commitment to being more data minded and transparent.

An open data portal is a web-based repository owned and maintained by the City that will serve as a single access point for open data. Open data is data made available to the public consistent with any and all applicable laws, regulations, ordinances, resolutions, policies or other legal restrictions, requirements or rights associated with the data.

More About Sugar Land Insights

Sugar Land Insights provides access to data from a variety of sources across the City. The topic groups featured on the portal are directly related to the City's eight strategic outcomes and include data from almost every City department.

The City's data is necessary for normal operations, but is also expected to produce many benefits as open data, such as:

  • Increasing transparency by allowing residents, businesses, and visitors to freely view data
  • Empowering the public to identify opportunities for innovation and partnership through access, analyze, and reuse data
  • Proactively providing information currently accessed via public records requests
  • Fostering cross departmental collaboration by making information easily shareable within the organization
  • Enhancing decision making though readily available data and analytics tools
