Keeping pets safe in the cold

Even “Sugar Land cold” can be dangerous for pets. If you’re cold, your pet probably is too. Use these simple steps to keep them safe and comfortable when temperatures drop.

Dogs

  • Bring pets inside during cold nights and wet, windy weather.
  • If they must be outdoors, provide a dry, insulated doghouse that’s off the ground and windproof.
  • No blankets or towels outdoors as they retain moisture and can freeze. Use straw or cedar shavings instead.
  • Short-haired, senior, or sick dogs benefit from a sweater or coat on walks.
  • Keep outdoor water bowls fresh and unfrozen; preferably use plastic rather than metal.
  • Watch for shivering, lifting paws, or slowing down, as these are early signs of stress from the cold.

Cats

  • Bring outdoor cats inside on cold or rainy nights.
  • For cats that insist on outdoor time, provide a small insulated shelter such as a covered plastic tote with straw bedding.
  • Make sure they have access to dry food and fresh water daily.
  • Tap your car hood before starting the engine, as cats sometimes hide under vehicles for warmth.
  • Provide safe, warm indoor sleeping areas away from drafts or cold floors.

Remember

Texas law requires pets to have adequate shelter and access to potable water at all times. Leaving animals outdoors in extreme weather without proper shelter may constitute neglect or cruelty.
