Sugar Land's Language Access Plan

Sugar Land is one of the most diverse cities in the nation, home to residents who speak many languages and communicate in different ways. In keeping with the City’s commitment to accessibility, the Language Access Plan (LAP) has been integrated into day-to-day practices to help remove  language barriers and ensure meaningful access to City services, programs, and activities for all residents, businesses, and visitors.

What is the Language Access Plan?

The LAP is a new framework that outlines how the City will provide language assistance, including oral interpretation, written translation of vital documents, and accessible communication services to those who need them. The goal is to support those who have Limited English Proficiency (LEP), are deaf or hard of hearing, or have other communication needs.

The LAP also provides clear guidance and tools that help City employees communicate effectively with those who need language or communication assistance. This will help them provide clearer communication, improved access to information, and more inclusive engagement across City services. Language access support is available when residents interact with the City:

  • In person
  • By phone
  • Online
  • At public meetings or events
  • When applying for or receiving City services

Language access support is available at no cost and upon request. Anyone who needs language or communication assistance is encouraged to let City staff know so appropriate support can be arranged.

Building a more accessible Sugar Land

By reducing communication barriers, the LAP aims is to create trust, improve service delivery, and create opportunities for all to stay informed, get involved, and feel confident engaging with their city. Our goal is to build a Sugar Land where everyone deserves to feel heard, understood, and included in the decisions that shape the community.
