Citizen's Police Academy

The Citizen's Police Academy is an opportunity to take an inside look at the Sugar Land Police Department, a remarkable organization of people and technology. This class is offered free of charge.

Students are introduced to all aspects of law enforcement, including:

  • Police Department Structure
  • Criminal Scene Investigations (CSI: Sugar Land)
  • Patrol Procedures
  • Traffic Laws and Traffic Stops
  • Active Shooter Situation Response

When in session, the class meets every Thursday for 10 weeks from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m., with 2 classes held on Saturdays at the Sugar Land Police Department.

In order to be considered for the academy, an applicant must: 

  • Be a current resident of Sugar Land, the extraterritorial jurisdiction, or have an employment address within the incorporated city limits of Sugar Land.
  • Submit a completed application
  • Provide a copy of their driver's license
  • Provide a copy of valid automobile liability insurance (upon admission to class)
  • Have no criminal history containing a class B misdemeanor or above in the previous 5 years from the date of application
  • Have no felony convictions regardless of time period

For new applicants (non-registered volunteers)

  • Go to
  • Click on the "Get Involved" link at the top and select the "New Volunteer" option that matches your age
  • Fill out the new volunteer application and submit
  • Upon registration, the “Citizens Police Academy Application- new volunteer” option will be available from the “Get Involved” menu
  • Fill out that application and submit

For existing Serve Sugar Land Volunteers 

  • Go to and login
  • Click on the “Get Involved” link at the top and select the “Citizens Police Academy Application - existing volunteer” option
  • Fill out the application and submit
