Conservation & Education

Join the H2O LAB!

The Sugar Lang Groundwater Reduction Program sponsors Sugar Land area students through the “H2O LAB!” water conservation education program. The Fort Bend Subsidence District has partnered with the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District (HGSD) in the implementation of the “H2O LAB!” water conservation program. The program involves the education of third through sixth grade students by providing student and teacher educational materials and a water conservation kit at no cost to the school or student.

Irrigation Recommendations

A large percentage of the Sugar Land’s total water demand is used outside and estimates are that half of that is wasted from over irrigating landscapes and poorly maintained irrigation systems. Following the Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension Service recommended "Cycle and Soak" irrigation method prevents wasteful water runoff and encourages deep root growth essential for healthy beautiful landscapes.

Residents can also evaluate their irrigation system for water use efficiency themselves by turning the system on and checking for broken and misaligned heads. This evaluation should be done every month to detect and repair water wasting problems and prevent excessive water loss.
