Are you a good fit?
The ideal candidate must be able to support the City of Sugar Land’s Holding Facility within the Police Department. The perfect candidate must be responsible for booking, securing, & feeding detainees, including continually monitoring detainee activities, completing necessary paperwork, and supervising the activities of detainees. The ideal candidate must maintain a knowledge and appreciation of Sugar Land and its basic safety standards and practices to ensure the safety and security of inmates. An understanding of basic laundry and keeping the detention center clean and orderly is a must. We are looking for a candidate that is able to work independently and restrain inmates as needed in any confrontation with staff or other inmates. Ability to conduct headcounts and door checks plus a strong attention to detail is critical for success in the role, as are high levels of accuracy, timeliness and dependability. We are looking for someone who can provide exceptional customer service for a variety of coworkers, supervisors and the general public with professionalism and patience. What We Need from You as A Detention Officer in the Police Department.
As our Detention Officer, you will represent the City of Sugar Land Police Department. You will be responsible for all aspects of the holding facility. Between booking inmates to processing their paperwork, you will be their temporary supervisor while in custody. Much of your day will be spent inside the holding facility, monitoring the inmates and tracking their meals. This position will hold you accountable for the information regarding current inmates. It is your priority to deliver excellent customer service to our inmates while maintaining their safety at all times. The ideal candidate is dependable, motivated, trustworthy, and responsible. You listen to your superiors and co-workers. You follow through and are accountable for all actions. Being at work on time is a priority along with following all safety protocols. When an emergency situation arises, you are not easily flustered, but are willing to work hard to help in any way designated by your leadership team. A great candidate would also ensure that routine inspections are completed in a timely manner. At the end of the day, you get great satisfaction out of completing a hard days’ work by making our inmate’s experience with our facilities smooth. - High School Diploma or GED Certificate required.
- One year of experience in a public safety-related or customer service position is required.
- Municipal government customer service experience preferred, but not required.
- Additional relevant work experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above knowledge; skill and education requirements may be substituted in lieu of specific education requirements.
- Valid Texas Class “C” Driver License
- Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Certified Jailer is preferred.
